Scale Insects

Honeydew is common with soft scales and mealybugs but generally absent from armored scales. Ant attendance suggests a honeydew producer, not every scale insect. The practical scouting hinge is several scale lineages: the brief crawler stage spreads, then later females become increasingly protected within the host tissue occupied by the suspected family.
Identification
This umbrella includes armored scales, soft scales, mealybugs, felt scales, lac scales, and several smaller lineages. Females are often sedentary and wax-covered, whereas crawlers and adult males may look unrelated. The first diagnostic split is whether the insect has a removable armored cover, an integrated soft body, exposed mealy wax, or another distinctive secretion. Search nursery plants, greenhouse crops, fruit trees, woody landscape plants, palms, cycads, roots, stems, foliage, and fruit.
