Twig Girdlers

Oncideres and related Cerambycidae

Twig Girdlers is a longhorn beetle twig-girdling group associated with twigs and small branches of pecan, hickory, oak, persimmon, and other woody hosts. Cleanly girdled twigs wilt, break, and fall, often bearing egg scars beyond the girdle. Act before internal protection develops.

Identification

Adult females chew a circular groove around a twig after laying eggs beyond the cut. Larvae develop in the fallen dead twig. Inspect freshly fallen twigs for a complete circular cut and larval galleries. Collect adults if species matters.

Symptoms / Signs

Cleanly girdled twigs wilt, break, and fall, often bearing egg scars beyond the girdle. Old holes may outlast activity.

Life Cycle / Process

Twig Girdlers undergoes complete metamorphosis. Egg placement follows the occupied site on twigs and small branches of pecan, hickory, oak, persimmon, and other woody hosts.

Prevention

Maintain vigor, prevent injury, and remove active reservoirs. Priority reservoir for this record: twigs and small branches of pecan, hickory, oak, persimmon, and other woody hosts.

Management / Control

Gather and destroy fallen girdled twigs before adults emerge, prune retained stubs cleanly, and protect tree vigor. Insecticides are rarely the main tactic.

Procedure Steps

1. Map the freshest holes, frass, wilt, flagging, sap, or branch decline. 2. Collect the larva, pupa, or adult with the damaged tissue. 3. Close the Twig Girdlers incident only after new internal injury stops.

Safety Notes

Avoid unnecessary broad-spectrum treatment until live damaging stages and fresh injury are confirmed. Protect pollinators, natural enemies, workers, food crops, wells, aquatic areas, and Myco-Patrons. Follow the current label for crop, site, target, PPE, restricted-entry, preharvest, and disposal requirements.
