Grafting

Grafting is the umbrella propagation method that joins a scion, bud, or stem segment to a genetically distinct rootstock so living tissues unite and function as one composite plant. It includes whip-and-tongue, cleft, bark, side, veneer, approach, saddle, splice, root, and repair grafts, plus budding methods. Success depends on biological compatibility, cambial contact, viable tissues, sanitation, timing, desiccation control, and aftercare.

Identification

Use this record for method selection and general graft biology, not as a substitute for a specific graft procedure. Identify stock and scion taxa, cultivar, diameter, physiological state, bark condition, desired purpose, and legal status. Compatibility is usually strongest within species or closely related taxa and should never be assumed across families.

Symptoms / Signs

A successful graft develops callus continuity, sustained scion growth, and a structurally stable union. Failure includes scion desiccation, no callus, blackened tissues, delayed incompatibility, swelling, bark cracking, weak attachment, rootstock overgrowth, or shoots originating below the union.

Life Cycle / Process

Wounded stock and scion tissues produce callus, establish cell continuity, and differentiate new xylem and phloem across the interface. The plant remains a genetic composite: roots and lower stem belong to the stock, while the shoot or bud belongs to the scion. Some incompatibilities appear only after months or years.

Prevention

Use known-compatible, disease-free material, sharp sanitized tools, correct seasonal timing, immediate assembly, cambial alignment, firm binding, and sealing where needed. Maintain labels and remove rootstock suckers. Do not bury unions intended to remain above soil, and respect patents, quarantines, and certified-stock programs.

Management / Control

Choose the graft type according to stock-scion diameter, bark slipping, plant architecture, and purpose. Monitor callus, tie pressure, moisture, stock vigor, and scion growth. Remove bindings before girdling, support vigorous shoots, and continue long-term inspection for incompatibility or structural weakness.

Procedure Steps

1. Define the propagation goal and exact graft type. 2. Verify stock-scion compatibility and legal status. 3. Select healthy material at the required physiological stage. 4. Label and sanitize tools. 5. Prepare stock and scion cuts for the selected method. 6. Align cambial regions. 7. Bind, clip, nail, or otherwise secure as required. 8. Seal exposed tissues against drying where appropriate. 9. Maintain crop-specific callusing conditions. 10. Inspect union formation and release constricting materials. 11. Remove competing stock growth and train the scion. 12. Record identities, method, take, and long-term union performance.

Safety Notes

Grafting combines very sharp blades, saws, ladders, sealants, and sometimes nails or clips. Use method-appropriate PPE and stable work supports. Disinfect tools and comply with intellectual-property and phytosanitary rules.
