Alternaria Leaf Spot
Alternaria spp., with species and pathotypes differing by hostAlternaria Leaf Spot is a host-dependent group of fungal diseases rather than one pathogen with a universal host range. Important examples include A. brassicicola, A. brassicae and A. raphani on brassicas, A. dauci on carrot, and other Alternaria species or pathotypes on cucurbits, ornamentals, herbs and seed crops. Disease commonly begins on older or injured foliage as circular brown to nearly black lesions, often with concentric rings and a chlorotic halo. On some crops the fungus also attacks heads, petioles, stems, pods or seed. The operational consequence varies from cosmetic spotting to premature defoliation, seed contamination and market-rotting of broccoli or cauliflower heads. Warm humid weather, repeated dew, overhead irrigation, infested residue and contaminated seed can sustain outbreaks, but the responsible species and management options must be matched to the host. A diagnosis based only on target-like rings is unsafe because early blight, target spot, Cercospora, Septoria, bacterial lesions and chemical droplets can overlap visually.
Identification
Classify this record as a fungal disease complex. Confirm the botanical host and affected organ before interpreting Alternaria-like morphology. Useful field clues are multiple generations of round lesions, dark olive to black sporulation on older tissue, concentric zoning, yellow halos and initial concentration on senescing leaves. Brassica infections may produce black, sunken spots on heads, while carrot Alternaria blight more often burns leaflet margins and petioles. Submit young expanding lesions with a narrow margin of healthy tissue, several disease stages, and any affected head, stem or seed lot. Keep samples dry and cool. Microscopy can identify Alternaria-type multicelled conidia, but species or pathotype assignment often requires culture, sequencing or host-specific testing. Because Alternaria fungi are common saprophytes, recovery from dead tissue alone does not prove primary causation. Separate this diagnosis from bacterial leaf spot when lesions are strongly water-soaked or accompanied by bacterial streaming, and from abiotic injury when distribution tracks spray direction, bench edges or a single treatment event.
Symptoms / Signs
Symptoms depend on the pathosystem. Typical foliar lesions start as pinpoints or small brown flecks, enlarge into circular or irregular necrotic spots, and may develop alternating light and dark rings. A yellow margin is common but not obligatory. Centers can dry, crack or drop out. Severe spotting coalesces into blighted sectors and accelerates leaf loss. Brassica heads may show superficial black specks that progress into sunken rot, especially after harvest; seedling infection can produce cotyledon spots and damping-off. Carrot foliage may show brown-to-black marginal blighting rather than neat rings. Look-alikes include early blight on tomato and potato, Cercospora and Septoria spots, black rot or bacterial spot on brassicas, downy mildew, herbicide droplets, fertilizer burn and natural senescence. Dark Alternaria sporulation is most informative when it develops directly from an active lesion, not merely from tissue that died for another reason.
Life Cycle / Process
Alternaria survives between crops in infected seed, crop debris, volunteer hosts and, for some species, weed hosts. During humid periods, conidiophores produce dry conidia that move by wind, rain splash, irrigation, workers and equipment. Germination requires surface moisture or very high humidity, although exact wetness and temperature requirements differ among species. Repeated infection cycles can occur rapidly when nights remain humid and foliage dries slowly. Infection may remain latent on seed, heads or harvested produce until handling, senescence or storage conditions favor expansion. Residue persistence and seedborne introduction are especially important in intensive transplant and seed production. The common name therefore does not justify assuming the same inoculum source or fungicide program across hosts.
Prevention
Use pathogen-free or tested seed when the crop-pathogen combination is known to be seedborne. Rotate away from the susceptible crop family long enough for residue to decompose, and control volunteers that bridge production cycles. Space plants for rapid drying, ventilate greenhouses before night humidity rises, and irrigate at a time that does not extend natural dew. Avoid moving workers or equipment through wet foliage. Remove rejected heads and heavily diseased residues rather than leaving them beside production blocks. Maintain balanced fertility because premature senescence and stress increase susceptibility, but do not overapply nitrogen to force soft, dense canopies. For nursery stock, quarantine incoming lots showing suspicious concentric lesions until the host-specific diagnosis is resolved.
Management / Control
Confirm the host-specific Alternaria disease before selecting chemical control. Remove badly affected leaves or plants when the planting is small and removal will meaningfully lower inoculum; do not strip so much foliage that fruit or heads become sunburned. Correct irrigation and airflow first. In commercial production, use only fungicides labeled for the exact crop and disease, follow resistance-management guidance, and rotate FRAC groups rather than repeating one mode of action. Protectant applications are most useful before repeated wet periods and cannot restore necrotic tissue. Seed treatment, hot-water treatment or sanitation practices may be appropriate for specific crops, but temperature and exposure must be validated for the seed lot to avoid loss of germination. When a marketable head or edible tissue is affected, assess postharvest decay and food-quality implications rather than treating the problem as foliage alone. Escalate atypical or severe outbreaks to a diagnostic laboratory because several regulated or bacterial diseases can mimic Alternaria.
Procedure Steps
1. Record host species, cultivar, crop stage, seed source and recent weather or irrigation history. 2. Map whether lesions began on older leaves, a single lot, a wet bench edge or throughout the planting. 3. Photograph entire plants, lesion fronts, both leaf surfaces and any head, stem or seed symptoms. 4. Collect leaves with small expanding lesions and a healthy margin; add affected heads, stems or seed in separate labeled packages. 5. Keep samples dry and cool and submit promptly for microscopy and, when consequences justify it, culture or molecular identification. 6. Suspend overhead irrigation and wet handling in the affected block while preserving adequate root-zone moisture. 7. Remove heavily diseased material into closed waste containers; clean tools and carts before moving to clean lots. 8. Review seed health, rotation, residue and cultivar susceptibility. 9. Apply a labeled control only after crop, target and resistance group are verified. 10. Reinspect new growth after one incubation interval and document whether incidence is still increasing.
Safety Notes
Alternaria on plants is primarily a crop-health problem, but dusty spores and decaying plant material can aggravate allergies in sensitive workers. Wear gloves and eye protection during sanitation and avoid generating airborne dust from dry infected residue. Do not compost severely diseased seed heads beside production areas. Follow pesticide labels, restricted-entry intervals, preharvest intervals and respirator requirements exactly. Do not consume produce with advancing soft rot, secondary mold or tissue breakdown. Prevent wash water, disinfectants and fungicides from entering wells, ponds or drainage channels.
