Bolting Stress
Bolting Stress is premature or undesirable transition from vegetative growth to flowering and seed production. It reduces quality in lettuce, spinach, brassicas, beets, carrots, onions, herbs, and root crops by making leaves bitter, roots woody, stems elongated, or heads loose. Triggers differ among species: long days and heat accelerate bolting in many leafy crops, while biennial crops may require exposure to chilling before later warmth and long days initiate flowering. Root restriction, drought, transplant stress, and cultivar genetics can intensify the response. Bolting is developmental, not infectious.
Identification
Confirm the crop’s normal flowering habit and whether a central flower stalk, elongated internodes, or flower buds are forming. Record planting date, cultivar, transplant age, day length, chilling exposure, heat, drought, and root restriction. Distinguish bolting from herbicide-induced elongation, nitrogen-driven stretch, low-light etiolation, phytoplasma witches'-broom, and normal maturity. In biennials, cold exposure history is often decisive.
Symptoms / Signs
Plants produce an elongated central stem, smaller leaves, flower buds, and eventually seed. Lettuce and herbs become bitter or tough. Brassica heads loosen, onions form seed stalks instead of bulbs, and root crops become woody or forked. Growth changes are generally organized and developmental rather than necrotic.
Life Cycle / Process
Bolting occurs when environmental and internal signals activate reproductive development. The relevant cues can include accumulated chilling, day length, temperature, plant size, drought, and hormonal state. Once the reproductive transition is advanced, returning to favorable conditions usually does not restore commercial vegetative quality.
Prevention
Choose slow-bolting cultivars, correct planting dates, appropriate transplant age, and crop-adapted day-length or temperature windows. Maintain even irrigation and avoid severe root restriction. Use shade or cooling for selected leafy crops during heat. Prevent unintended vernalization of biennial transplants.
Management / Control
Harvest promptly when quality is still acceptable. Remove bolted plants if they interfere with production or contribute unwanted seed. Adjust future planting date, cultivar, cooling, irrigation, and transplant handling. Do not treat bolting with fungicides or bactericides. Growth regulators are crop- and label-specific and should not be improvised.
Procedure Steps
1. Photograph the whole plant and flower stalk. 2. Confirm normal crop maturity and cultivar. 3. Record chilling, heat, day length, drought, and transplant age. 4. Compare with etiolation, herbicide injury, and phytoplasma symptoms. 5. Harvest usable tissue. 6. Remove unwanted seed producers. 7. Correct scheduling and stress controls. 8. Record cultivar performance.
Safety Notes
Bolted plants are not inherently unsafe, but quality can decline and some crops become excessively bitter or fibrous. Use normal sharps and lifting safety during removal. Follow labels for any shade compounds or growth regulators.
