Cane Blight
Leptosphaeria coniothyrium and related cane-infecting fungiIn operational diagnosis, Cane Blight denotes fungal cane disease of brambles. The most informative clue is dark brown to purple lesions centered on pruning cuts, harvest wounds or cracks, followed by wilting and death of lateral shoots above the lesion. That clue must be read with the host and tissue because spur blight, anthracnose, Botryosphaeria canker, winter injury and borer damage can produce superficially similar damage.
Identification
The causal identity associated with Cane Blight is Leptosphaeria coniothyrium and related cane-infecting fungi. Confirmed or commonly affected hosts include raspberry and blackberry canes, particularly wounded floricanes and susceptible cultivars. Examine the organ where disease begins and look specifically for dark brown to purple lesions centered on pruning cuts, harvest wounds or cracks, followed by wilting and death of lateral shoots above the lesion. The preferred submission is a cane segment containing several centimeters of healthy and discolored tissue on both sides of the lesion; include the wound origin. Keep fruit and succulent tissue cool, package dry foliage in paper, and prevent detached spores or leaking tissue from contaminating other samples. The main differentials are spur blight, anthracnose, Botryosphaeria canker, winter injury and borer damage. Laboratory work may include microscopy of fruiting bodies or spores, culturing from an active margin, and PCR or sequencing when species or regulated status changes management.
Symptoms / Signs
Cane blight usually declares itself after bloom or during fruit fill, when one or more fruiting laterals wilt while adjacent laterals remain green. Trace the wilt downward to a pruning cut, harvest wound, split, or other injury surrounded by a dark brown to purple lesion. Bark may become brittle and gray as the lesion ages, and tiny black fruiting bodies can develop in dead tissue. Affected canes may die above the canker without the numerous small leaf and node lesions typical of spur blight. Winter injury, borer tunneling, anthracnose and Botryosphaeria canker remain important differentials, especially when no wound-centered lesion is present.
Life Cycle / Process
Leptosphaeria coniothyrium and related cane-infecting fungi survive in dead or diseased cane tissue. During wet weather, fruiting bodies release spores that are moved mainly by rain splash. Infection is strongly associated with fresh wounds, including pruning cuts, harvest injuries, thorn scratches and cane cracking. The fungus colonizes bark and cambium, and symptoms may remain inconspicuous until laterals place greater demand on the damaged vascular tissue. Infected canes become inoculum sources for subsequent wet periods; disease pressure therefore rises where old floricanes remain in the row and irrigation repeatedly wets canes.
Prevention
Remove spent floricanes promptly after harvest and destroy or remove them from the production block rather than leaving them in row middles. Time pruning for dry weather when practical, avoid crushing or tearing canes, and keep mower, trellis and harvest damage to a minimum. Use clean planting stock, maintain adequate spacing, direct irrigation toward the root zone, and manage weeds so canes dry quickly. Sanitize cutting tools between suspect lots. Fungicides cannot restore colonized cambium; any preventive use must be supported for the crop, timing and pathogen on the current label.
Management / Control
Confirm that wilted laterals trace to a discrete wound-associated cane lesion. Cut through the lesion to assess cambial discoloration and submit a section spanning healthy and diseased tissue when the diagnosis is uncertain. Remove affected canes several centimeters below visible discoloration during dry weather and take them out of the planting. Reduce additional wounding, correct excessive cane density and avoid overhead irrigation late in the day. Review harvest and pruning practices if lesions cluster at repeated injury points. Where cane blight recurs commercially, integrate resistant or less susceptible cultivars, residue removal and locally recommended preventive programs rather than relying on curative sprays.
Procedure Steps
1. Map wilted laterals and identify the cane and wound associated with each symptom. 2. Photograph the entire cane, lesion, pruning cut and internal discoloration after a clean cross-section. 3. Collect a 20 to 30 cm cane section that includes healthy tissue on both sides of the lesion; label cultivar, age and wound type. 4. Compare with spur blight, anthracnose, winter injury and borer damage, checking for insect galleries or diffuse cold injury. 5. Prune confirmed canes below discoloration in dry weather, remove debris, clean tools and document the injury source. 6. Reinspect after the next wet period and during fruit fill for newly wilting laterals.
Safety Notes
Bramble thorns, splintered canes and pruning blades create puncture and eye hazards; wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection. Keep diseased cane fragments out of propagation and compost streams that do not reach pathogen-killing temperatures. Follow all re-entry, harvest and pollinator restrictions for products used on edible caneberries.
