Downy Mildew

Downy Mildew is a group of host-specialized foliar diseases caused by obligate oomycetes, chiefly in the Peronosporaceae. Cucurbit, basil, brassica, lettuce, grape, rose, impatiens and other downy mildews are biologically distinct; a pathogen on one host should not be assumed to threaten unrelated crops. Typical disease begins as pale yellow, angular or vein-bounded areas on the upper leaf surface. Gray, white, violet or brown sporulation may emerge through stomata on the lower surface during humid nights and early mornings. Severe infection can collapse foliage, defoliate plants, reduce yield and make nursery stock unsalable. Diagnosis requires the exact host, fresh sporulating tissue and, when consequences are significant, microscopy or a host-specific molecular assay. Powdery mildew, bacterial angular leaf spot, edema, nutrient chlorosis and spray injury are frequent look-alikes.

Identification

Classify this record as a broad downy-mildew group, not a single pathogen. Confirm the botanical host and cultivar before interpreting signs because genera such as Plasmopara, Peronospora, Pseudoperonospora and Bremia have narrow host ranges and different survival pathways. Inspect leaves before the canopy dries. Look for upper-surface yellowing aligned with veins and corresponding lower-surface sporangiophores that form a downy layer. Older lesions may become brown and lose diagnostic sporulation. Submit several fresh leaves, including early lesions and apparently healthy margins, flat in dry paper with crop history, transplant source and recent humidity or leaf-wetness information. Microscopy can confirm an oomycete morphology but often cannot provide species-level identity; PCR or sequencing may be needed. Do not diagnose from yellow upper-surface lesions alone.

Symptoms / Signs

Symptoms vary by host but usually begin as pale, chlorotic patches. On cucurbits and lettuce, lesions are commonly angular because veins restrict colonization. Basil may show diffuse yellowing before dark gray growth appears beneath. Grapes may develop yellow oil spots and white sporulation; ornamentals may show purple-gray growth, distortion and rapid leaf drop. Disease often starts in humid lower or interior canopy zones and advances quickly after repeated wet nights. Powdery mildew generally grows on the upper surface and does not require free water, while bacterial spots may be water-soaked and lack organized downy sporulation. Advanced tissue can be invaded by secondary fungi and bacteria, obscuring the original sign.

Life Cycle / Process

Downy mildews are obligate biotrophs that grow only in living compatible hosts. Sporangiophores emerge through stomata in darkness or very high humidity and release sporangia that move by wind and splash. Germination and infection depend on species-specific temperature and wetness requirements. Some pathogens persist locally as sexual oospores in debris, seed or soil; others survive on living hosts or arrive seasonally on long-distance air currents. A long latent interval can separate infection from visible sporulation. The disease cycle therefore cannot be generalized beyond the need for a compatible host, humid canopy and viable inoculum.

Prevention

Purchase inspected, symptom-free seed, liners and transplants from suppliers that monitor the relevant host-specific downy mildew. Keep incoming lots separated long enough to observe new growth. Select resistant cultivars where resistance is documented for that host and pathogen population. Space plants, prune or train canopies, ventilate protected structures and irrigate early so leaves dry promptly. Favor drip or subirrigation over repeated overhead wetting. Remove volunteer hosts and production residues when the pathogen can persist locally. Scout lower leaf surfaces during humid mornings and segregate suspicious lots before workers, carts or splash move inoculum.

Management / Control

Identify the host-specific disease before selecting controls. Isolate affected lots and stop moving plants, cuttings or fresh foliage from them. Remove badly affected plants in closed bags when removal will reduce inoculum; avoid shaking sporulating foliage. Correct extended humidity, condensation and irrigation timing immediately. For commercial crops, use only products labeled for the crop and downy mildew, and build a resistance-management program around FRAC groups because many oomycete-active ingredients are vulnerable to resistance. Protectant and systemic products work best preventively or very early; they do not restore dead tissue. Home-garden options may be limited. Confirm unusual or high-consequence outbreaks through a diagnostic laboratory and consult Extension when regional alerts indicate a new pathotype or resistance shift.

Procedure Steps

1. Record the exact host, cultivar, source lot, planting date and first symptom date. 2. Scout at dawn or after a humid night and photograph both leaf surfaces before sporulation dries. 3. Separate affected plants and suspend overhead irrigation or handling that splashes leaves. 4. Collect fresh early lesions with corresponding lower-surface growth; package leaves flat and dry, keep cool and submit promptly. 5. Compare with powdery mildew, bacterial angular leaf spot, edema, nutrient chlorosis and chemical injury. 6. Confirm the host-specific pathogen when species identity changes quarantine, cultivar or product decisions. 7. Improve drying, airflow and sanitation, then follow a crop-labeled prevention program with resistance-group rotation. 8. Reinspect adjacent lots and new growth on a schedule matched to local weather risk.

Safety Notes

Downy mildews are plant pathogens and are not known to infect people, but heavily decayed produce may carry secondary spoilage organisms. Do not market visibly diseased edible foliage. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling diseased material, sanitizers or pesticides. Never assume that a fungicide labeled for powdery mildew controls downy mildew; oomycetes require different active ingredients. Follow the crop label, restricted-entry interval, preharvest interval and resistance-management directions, and prevent spray or wash-water runoff.
