Frost Damage

Frost Damage is tissue injury caused when plant surfaces cool to freezing or below, often on clear calm nights even when measured air temperature remains slightly above 32°F. Radiational heat loss can chill leaves, flowers, buds, and fruit below the surrounding air temperature. Tender spring growth, blossoms, tropical plants, low-lying sites, and exposed upper surfaces are particularly vulnerable. Frost Damage is narrower than the broader Cold Injury record: it specifically centers on frost or freezing exposure rather than chilling injury above freezing.

Identification

Record the minimum air temperature, dew point, wind, cloud cover, duration, site elevation, frost formation, and whether symptoms appeared after a clear calm night. Compare exposed tissue with leaves under covers, eaves, or dense canopy. Water-soaked, darkened, limp tissue that later dries supports frost injury. Check flowers, buds, cambium, and fruit over several days because damage can be delayed. Herbicide injury, bacterial blight, fire blight, and drought can mimic blackened shoots.

Symptoms / Signs

Leaves and flowers become glassy, water-soaked, limp, black, bronze, or papery. Blossoms collapse, fruitlets abort, buds fail, and tender shoots bend or die. Damage often occurs on upper, outer, or low-lying tissue while protected inner leaves remain normal. Woody bark may split after severe freezing. Ice crystals or white frost may have been visible during the event but are not required for diagnosis.

Life Cycle / Process

Frost injury is a single environmental event, not an infectious cycle. Plant surfaces lose heat by radiation, reach freezing temperature, and develop extracellular or intracellular ice. Cell dehydration and membrane rupture become visible during thaw. Dead tissue will not recover, but protected meristems and roots may produce new growth. Secondary pathogens can colonize damaged tissue later.

Prevention

Choose frost-tolerant species and planting dates, avoid low cold-air pockets, harden plants gradually, maintain moderate soil moisture, and use covers that extend to the ground. Use irrigation frost protection only with correctly designed systems that can run continuously through the freezing period. Remove insulating mulch temporarily only where established regional guidance supports soil heat release. Monitor forecasts and on-site temperatures.

Management / Control

Do not prune extensively immediately after a frost because dead tissue can protect underlying buds and the full injury boundary may not be visible. Maintain moderate water, avoid heavy fertilizer, remove only hazardous breakage, and wait for regrowth before final pruning. Protect newly exposed bark from sun injury. Diagnose secondary cankers separately if lesions expand after the frost event.

Procedure Steps

1. Record temperature, wind, cloud cover, and frost duration. 2. Photograph exposed and protected tissue. 3. Mark plants for follow-up rather than pruning immediately. 4. Check buds and cambium after several days. 5. Maintain moderate moisture. 6. Avoid strong fertilizer. 7. Remove hazardous tissue only. 8. Prune to living tissue after new growth identifies boundaries.

Safety Notes

Covers, heaters, irrigation, electricity, propane, and icy surfaces create fire, shock, carbon-monoxide, and slip hazards. Never use unvented combustion heaters in enclosed production. Irrigation systems must tolerate ice loading and avoid flooding. Use ladder and pruning safety.
