Transplant Shock
Transplant Shock is temporary or permanent decline after moving a plant, disturbing roots, changing media, or shifting it into a new light, wind, temperature, humidity, or irrigation environment. Symptoms reflect an imbalance between the remaining root system and water demand from shoots. Bare-root plants, balled-and-burlapped trees, root-bound containers, poorly hardened seedlings, and plants moved during hot dry weather are at greatest risk. Transplant Shock is not one disease, but it can expose or amplify root rot, girdling roots, drought, sunburn, cold injury, and nutrient problems.
Identification
Record plant source, root-ball type, planting date, root pruning, hardening, transport conditions, planting depth, burlap or wire treatment, irrigation, mulch, staking, weather, and symptom timing. Inspect whether the root flare is visible, the root ball is fully wetted, roots circle or kink, and surrounding soil accepts water. Compare with root rot, herbicide injury, salts, cold, heat, and vascular disease. Container media can remain dry while surrounding soil is wet, or the reverse.
Symptoms / Signs
Plants wilt, drop leaves, scorch margins, stop growth, fail to establish, or show delayed bud break. Evergreen foliage may bronze or desiccate. New transplants can remain loose in the soil or develop dieback because roots never extend beyond the original ball. Symptoms are often strongest during heat, wind, or the first dry period after planting.
Life Cycle / Process
Transplant shock is an establishment process rather than an infectious lifecycle. Root loss and environmental change reduce water uptake while the canopy continues transpiring. Recovery depends on new root growth into surrounding soil, restoration of hydraulic balance, and survival of buds and cambium. Severe root desiccation, deep planting, girdling, or rot can prevent recovery.
Prevention
Harden seedlings, move plants during suitable weather, protect roots during transport, correct circling roots, plant at the proper depth, water both root ball and surrounding soil, and mulch without covering the trunk or crown. Avoid excessive top pruning, fertilizer, or staking. Match light and wind exposure gradually for indoor or shade-grown plants.
Management / Control
Check planting depth, root-ball moisture, drainage, and structural stability before adding fertilizer. Rewater slowly so the entire root ball becomes moist. Correct buried root flares, constricting ties, or unremoved container defects where feasible. Provide temporary shade or wind protection. Remove only dead tissue after recovery boundaries appear. Diagnose root disease if decline continues despite correct establishment care.

Safety Notes
Large root balls, wire baskets, stakes, digging equipment, and trees create lifting, cut, and instability hazards. Call utility-locating services before digging. Avoid overwatering that promotes root rot. Follow pesticide reentry restrictions for nursery stock.
