Corm Division

Corm division propagates corm-forming plants by separating daughter corms or cormels produced around a parent corm. A corm is a solid, swollen underground stem with nodes, buds, and a basal root area; it is not a layered true bulb. Depending on species, the old corm may be replaced annually by a new corm above it, while small cormels accumulate around the base. Daughter units are clonal but may need several growth cycles to reach flowering size.

Identification

Confirm a solid stem organ rather than fleshy bulb scales, a rhizome, or a tuberous root. Select firm corms with intact buds and no soft rot, basal lesions, insect tunneling, or desiccation. Separate daughter corms and cormels during the crop-specific dormant or lifting period. Each propagule must have a viable bud and sufficient storage tissue. Tiny cormels can be grown in nursery rows or containers until mature.

Symptoms / Signs

Successful corms produce roots from the basal region and shoots from upper buds. Failure includes mushy decay, mold, shriveling, blind corms, weak emergence, or foliage collapse. Cormels may remain vegetative for multiple seasons. Incorrect polarity, excessive planting depth, waterlogged substrate, or storage at unsuitable temperature can delay emergence or cause rot.

Life Cycle / Process

Stored reserves support initial growth. During the season, leaves replenish and enlarge the new corm while the prior corm may senesce. Daughter corms or cormels develop clonally and become independent after separation. Systemic diseases and pests can be multiplied with the stock, making inspection and clean sourcing important.

Prevention

Allow foliage to mature so the replacement corm accumulates reserves. Lift carefully, cure or dry only as required, and separate when tissues are firm. Clean storage rooms and grade out damaged units. Maintain crop-specific storage temperature, humidity, and airflow. Use well-drained planting media and rotate susceptible field crops. Do not refer to cormels as bulb offsets in records where anatomical precision matters.

Management / Control

Sort parent corms and cormels by size. Remove the exhausted old corm or adhering debris only when recommended. Plant with buds upward at a depth adjusted for species, corm size, and soil texture. Protect tender corms from cold according to local climate. In humid North Florida production, emphasize drainage and prompt removal of rotting material. Maintain lot traceability through storage and planting.

Procedure Steps

1. Confirm that the organ is a corm and identify its growth cycle. 2. Select healthy plants and allow foliage to replenish reserves. 3. Lift at the crop-appropriate stage and label the lot. 4. Clean gently and inspect for rot, insects, and damage. 5. Separate daughter corms and cormels without injuring buds. 6. Remove exhausted tissue only where crop guidance supports it. 7. Cure or dry under validated conditions if required. 8. Grade and store with suitable temperature, humidity, and airflow, or replant promptly. 9. Plant with correct polarity, depth, spacing, and drainage. 10. Irrigate according to root activity. 11. Monitor emergence, disease, and enlargement. 12. Record cormel yield, survival, and time to flowering size.

Safety Notes

Some corms are toxic if eaten. Wear gloves when handling treated or irritating material, use knives carefully, and follow phytosanitary and pesticide requirements. Keep ornamental corms separate from edible crop stock.
