Aquatic Plant Division
Aquatic plant division is the clonal separation of rooted or free-growing aquatic plants into viable units containing the species-appropriate crown, rhizome, shoot, root, or bud. It is an umbrella method spanning submerged, emergent, floating-leaved, and marginal plants. Water depth, sediment type, oxygen, temperature, and containment are as important as the cut itself.
Identification
Identify the plant and its growth form before division. Determine whether it spreads by crown, rhizome, runner, tuber, winter bud, or free-floating ramet. Select healthy material without decay, algae smothering, snails, pathogens, or herbicide injury. Verify legal status because many aquatic plants are invasive or regulated.
Symptoms / Signs
Successful divisions remain buoyant or anchored as appropriate, produce roots and shoots, and avoid progressive tissue melt. Failure includes crown burial, rhizome rot, uprooting, flotation of rooted divisions, anaerobic sediment injury, desiccation during handling, or escape into drains and waterways.
Life Cycle / Process
Existing meristems resume growth after separation. Rooted aquatics establish in sediment, while free-floating forms divide into independent ramets. Clonal fragments can spread rapidly, making containment and disposal central to responsible propagation.
Prevention
Confirm species legality, use dedicated tanks, screens, and drain controls, disinfect equipment between systems, and prevent fragments, water, snails, and sediment from leaving containment. Match planting depth and substrate to the exact growth form.
Management / Control
Work in shallow trays or drained containers where anatomy can be seen. Separate natural units, preserve viable buds and roots, and replant at the original sediment depth. Maintain crop-specific water chemistry, temperature, light, and circulation. Quarantine new material and cull decay.

1. Identify the aquatic species and legal status. 2. Classify its crown, rhizome, runner, tuber, or floating growth form. 3. Quarantine and inspect donor material. 4. Prepare contained tanks, substrate, labels, and clean tools. 5. Lift or support the plant without allowing desiccation. 6. Separate natural units with viable meristems and adequate roots or reserves. 7. Remove decayed and pest-infested tissue. 8. Replant or float at species-appropriate depth and orientation. 9. Maintain suitable water quality, temperature, light, and circulation. 10. Monitor rooting, melt, pests, and escape. 11. Harden divisions to the destination system. 12. Record source, yield, and containment disposition.

Aquatic work creates slip, drowning, electrical, mosquito, and waterborne-pathogen hazards. Use ground-fault protection and never release plants, fragments, sediment, or untreated water into natural waterways.
