Seed-Starting Mix
Seed-starting mix is a fine, uniform, low-salt substrate intended for germination and the earliest seedling stage. It must support seed-to-media contact, even moisture, oxygen diffusion, and predictable emergence without excessive nutrient or pathogen pressure.
Identification
Confirm fine but non-collapsing texture, uniform screening, low EC, suitable pH, rapid rewetting, and freedom from large debris. Record ingredients, wetting agent, starter charge, and whether the product is intended for flats, cells, blocks, or community pots.
Symptoms / Signs
Crusting, waterlogging, hydrophobic patches, high salts, excessive compost, or poor sanitation can produce erratic emergence, seed rot, damping-off, algae, weak roots, or seedling burn. Overly coarse material gives poor contact around small seed.
Life Cycle / Process
The medium moves from an unrooted, evaporation-dominated surface to a root-filled seedling volume. Water demand and nutrient need rise after emergence, while repeated irrigation can concentrate salts or collapse fine pores.
Prevention
Use clean containers and tools, premoisten evenly, avoid compaction, sow at species-appropriate depth, and provide drainage. Do not add strong fertilizer before germination unless the crop protocol specifically supports it.
Management / Control
Maintain moisture without continuous saturation, provide airflow and appropriate temperature, and begin dilute fertility according to seedling development and test results. Remove diseased seedlings and correct environmental causes rather than merely drying the surface.
Procedure Steps
1. Review seed size, germination requirements, tray depth, and expected time to transplant. 2. Inspect the mix and verify pH and EC. 3. Premoisten uniformly. 4. Fill containers loosely and level without heavy compression. 5. Sow and cover at the required depth. 6. Manage temperature, moisture, light, and airflow while recording emergence. 7. Test or adjust fertility after seedlings establish and document transplant quality.
Safety Notes
Avoid inhaling dry peat, coir, perlite, or vermiculite dust. Clean reused trays before filling. Treated seed, fungicides, and disinfectants require label-compliant PPE and disposal.
