Woody Plant Nursery Mix
Woody plant nursery mix is a structurally durable, usually bark-forward finished substrate for shrubs and trees grown through longer container cycles. It must sustain aeration, anchorage, water availability, and nutrient management despite decomposition, root occupancy, weather exposure, and repeated irrigation.
Identification
Record bark species, aging or composting status, particle-size distribution, fines, co-components, bulk density, air space, container capacity, pH, EC, lime and fertilizer charges, and intended container range. Evaluate stability over the planned production period, not only when fresh.
Symptoms / Signs
Excess fines and decomposition reduce air space; overly coarse mixes dry rapidly and may anchor poorly; fresh bark can immobilize nitrogen; high salts or unsuitable pH cause root injury; and inconsistent particle grading produces uneven irrigation response across the crop.
Life Cycle / Process
Bark softens and fragments, roots occupy pores, fertilizer and irrigation salts accumulate, and containers experience settlement, tipping, freeze-thaw, and intense summer heating. Long-cycle crops expose weaknesses that short greenhouse trials may miss.
Prevention
Specify graded, aged material and reject sour, overheated, contaminated, or highly variable lots. Match particle size to container height, crop duration, irrigation delivery, and expected wind exposure. Test incoming media before potting.
Management / Control
Monitor container weight or moisture, leachate, pH, EC, root health, shrinkage, and physical stability. Adjust irrigation by container class and crop canopy. Retest or replace media when decomposition or root occupancy has materially changed pore structure.
Procedure Steps
1. Define species group, liner size, final container, crop duration, and irrigation method. 2. Inspect bark aging, odor, particle grading, and contaminants. 3. Sample and test pH, EC, nutrients, air space, container capacity, and bulk density. 4. Pot representative liners at production packing density. 5. Evaluate drainage, anchorage, dry-down, and irrigation uniformity. 6. Monitor roots and shrinkage through a trial period. 7. Approve the formulation and document lot-specific irrigation and fertility controls.
Safety Notes
Use respiratory and eye protection around bark dust, perlite, lime, and dry fertilizers. Mechanized mixing, potting, and bulk handling create pinch, noise, and dust hazards. Avoid moving contaminated used substrate between nursery blocks.
