Container Potting Mix
Container Potting Mix is a legacy name for a finished root-zone blend engineered for containers. It is scientifically a growing medium rather than a field-soil class, but the frozen soil_type classification is preserved pending administrator review.
Identification
Evaluate the complete blend, not only its ingredients. Record particle-size distribution, bulk density, total and air-filled porosity, container capacity, wettability, pH, EC, lime and fertilizer charge, wetting agent, and intended container size. Field soil and bagged “garden soil” are not interchangeable with container media because confinement changes aeration and drainage.
Symptoms / Signs
Poor structure may cause perched saturation, oxygen deficiency, shrinkage, channeling, hydrophobic dry zones, or plant instability. High EC, inappropriate pH, decomposition, fungus gnats, shore flies, algae, or uneven fertilizer release can mimic irrigation and disease problems.
Life Cycle / Process
Organic components decompose and shrink; fine particles migrate; roots occupy pore space; salts accumulate; and pH drifts with irrigation alkalinity and fertilizer chemistry. Reused mix may retain pathogens, roots, pesticides, or nutrient imbalances even after visible debris is removed.
Prevention
Specify physical and chemical ranges for the crop, container geometry, irrigation system, and production duration. Store media covered and off the ground, protect it from contamination, pre-wet uniformly, and do not call it sterile unless a validated treatment and protected handling chain support that claim.
Management / Control
Use standardized substrate extraction and physical-property methods. Adjust irrigation pulse and leaching fraction to measured container behavior, not field-soil assumptions. Correct pH or fertility only after testing; discard or segregate media with structural collapse, regulated contamination, or unresolved disease risk.

1. Record supplier, formulation, lot, and intended use. 2. Inspect moisture, odor, contaminants, and particle uniformity. 3. Sample unopened and in-use media consistently. 4. Test pH and EC with the specified substrate method. 5. Verify container capacity and aeration in the actual container. 6. establish irrigation and fertility from crop response and leachate trends. 7. document changes, reuse decisions, and disposal route.
Safety Notes
Control dust from peat, bark, perlite, and mineral components. Use gloves and mechanical assistance for bulk handling. Disinfect equipment between lots where plant-pathogen transfer is plausible, and follow pesticide labels before reusing treated media.
