Raised Bed Mix
Raised Bed Mix is a legacy descriptor for a constructed root-zone blend used above or partly above native grade. It is not a standardized soil type: products may be mineral-soil dominant, compost dominant, or largely soilless, with very different settling, fertility, and drainage behavior.
Identification
Record ingredient proportions, bed depth, interface with native soil, particle-size distribution, bulk density, organic matter, pH, EC, nutrient analysis, and drainage. Inspect for woody debris, uncomposted material, construction waste, herbicide injury, and abrupt textural boundaries that impede water movement.
Symptoms / Signs
Beds may settle rapidly, become hydrophobic, remain perched above compacted native soil, leach nutrients, or accumulate salts and phosphorus. Excess compost can cause nutrient imbalance; excessive fine mineral soil can compact; coarse undecomposed wood can immobilize nitrogen and create voids.
Life Cycle / Process
Organic ingredients decompose and the bed subsides, while roots, rainfall, irrigation, and cultivation redistribute particles. Nutrients may accumulate from repeated compost and fertilizer applications. The native-soil interface can improve through biological activity or remain restrictive if compacted or lined improperly.
Prevention
Design the bed for crop rooting depth and drainage, loosen but do not pulverize the native interface, and avoid filling with pure compost or unidentified “topsoil.” Require supplier specifications and test imported material before bulk delivery when food production or sensitive crops are planned.
Management / Control
Sample raised-bed media separately from native soil and by depth where layering is evident. Replace lost volume with a tested material selected for the diagnosed need, not automatically more compost. Correct drainage at the outlet and interface rather than adding coarse particles blindly.

1. Measure bed dimensions, depth, slope, and native-soil condition. 2. Specify target physical and chemical properties. 3. Inspect and test candidate bulk materials. 4. blend uniformly and avoid wet compaction during filling. 5. Irrigate to assess settling and drainage before planting. 6. test fertility and salts during production. 7. record subsidence and amend only to restore measured function.

Screen imported material for glass, metal, treated wood, construction debris, contaminants, and regulated waste. Use dust control and safe lifting. Food beds require special caution with unknown urban soil, biosolids, persistent herbicides, and manure-derived pathogens.
