Direct Seed
Direct Seed is retained as a legacy identity for placing seed directly into its final production container, bed, plug position, restoration cell, or growing location without first raising a transplant in a separate nursery stage. Its operational emphasis is the seed lot and placement decision, while the closely related Direct Sowing record emphasizes field or bed establishment as a horticultural operation. Direct seeding avoids transplant shock, root deformation, and nursery labor, and is often appropriate for tap-rooted species, cover crops, grains, many vegetables, restoration mixes, and species that establish best in place. It is less suitable where seed is extremely expensive, germination is erratic, weed or predator pressure is high, environmental control is essential, or the production schedule requires uniform transplants. Because this identity overlaps semantically with Direct Sowing, 3G-GroveOS should preserve it but use an explicit boundary note and administrator review rather than silently merging it.
Identification
Use Direct Seed when the batch record is centered on seed delivery into the intended final establishment unit, including final pots, nursery beds, landscape cells, field rows, or restoration microsites. The seed may still receive scarification, stratification, priming, inoculation, coating, or sanitation before placement; those are separate supporting treatments. Do not use this record for transplant production in flats, for vegetative propagules, or for simply broadcasting seed without a defined establishment plan. Species selection must account for seed size, germination ecology, sowing depth, light response, expected emergence, root sensitivity, and competitive ability. The final site must be prepared before sowing because young germinants have little reserve and cannot be rescued easily from crusted soil, flooding, drought, weeds, ants, birds, rodents, or washout. For tiny light-requiring seeds, placement may mean surface contact and pressing rather than burial. For large seeds, depth depends on seed morphology, soil texture, moisture, and species guidance, not a universal formula.
Symptoms / Signs
Success is shown by emergence in the intended pattern, normal cotyledons, progressive root anchorage, true-leaf formation, and survival through thinning and early environmental stress. Failure appears as empty stations, uneven emergence, seed exposure, crusting, damping-off, seedling burial, etiolation, predation, washout, herbicide injury, nutrient or salt damage, and dense clumps that compete or lodge. Seeds may remain viable but dormant, so absence of immediate emergence does not always mean mortality. Patchy emergence often maps to irrigation distribution, compaction, depth variation, seed-soil contact, shade, or seed-lot heterogeneity. Distinguish poor germination from post-emergence loss by documenting counts soon after radicle or hypocotyl emergence.
Life Cycle / Process
The seed imbibes water in the final site, resumes metabolism, ruptures the coat, and extends the radicle into the surrounding substrate. Emergence then depends on the seedling reaching light and establishing photosynthetic tissue before reserves are exhausted. Direct-seeded plants often maintain an undisturbed primary root architecture, but they experience the site's full temperature, moisture, pest, and competition regime from the beginning. The method produces genetically variable sexual progeny unless highly uniform inbred or hybrid seed is used. Selection can occur unintentionally because only genotypes able to emerge under the chosen conditions survive.
Prevention
Use tested, correctly stored seed with documented purity, treatment status, and germination information. Match sowing timing to species temperature needs and the expected weather window. Prepare a firm, weed-reduced, well-drained seedbed or final substrate with appropriate salinity and texture. Calibrate placement equipment and verify depth and rate during operation. Protect labels and maps, especially where multiple accessions are sown. Avoid overwatering, which reduces oxygen, and avoid allowing the seed zone to dry during imbibition. Use physical exclusion or legal pest management where seed predation is predictable. In North Florida, intense rain, heat, and rapid surface drying can occur in the same week; shade cloth, mulch appropriate to seed size, fine irrigation, or a different sowing window may be necessary.
Management / Control
Create a seeding plan with site, date, seed lot, target density, expected germination, depth, row or cell arrangement, irrigation, weed control, and monitoring dates. Adjust the sowing quantity for tested pure live seed rather than packet weight alone where precision matters. After emergence, distinguish seedlings from weeds before cultivation. Thin crowded stations early enough to prevent root entanglement, retaining the healthiest correctly identified plants. Repair gaps only after diagnosing whether the cause was seed quality, timing, depth, moisture, predation, or site heterogeneity. Record emergence percentage and final establishment separately. For conservation or research accessions, avoid unrecorded reseeding because it destroys cohort and provenance traceability.
Procedure Steps
1. Confirm that direct establishment is suitable for the taxon and define the final growing unit or mapped site.
2. Record seed identity, lot, provenance, treatment status, purity, viability or germination information, and target plant density.
3. Prepare the final substrate or seedbed for drainage, tilth, weed reduction, and uniform seed-soil contact.
4. Select the sowing date from species requirements and the expected temperature, rainfall, irrigation, and pest window.
5. Calibrate the placement rate and depth using a small test area; account for tiny surface-sown or light-requiring seed.
6. Sow into labeled rows, stations, cells, pots, or mapped restoration units without mixing lots.
7. Firm the seed zone as appropriate and irrigate gently enough to hydrate without exposing, burying, or washing seed away.
8. Protect against drying, crusting, flooding, predators, and weed competition using crop-appropriate controls.
9. Count emergence and early mortality separately, thin or gap-fill only with documented decisions, and record causes of failure.
10. Continue monitoring until roots, true leaves, and growth indicate independent establishment in the final site.
Safety Notes
Use respiratory protection when required for dusty, coated, inoculated, or pesticide-treated seed and follow every seed-label restriction. Treated seed must never enter food or feed channels. Use hearing, eye, hand, and footwear protection with mechanical seeders or soil-preparation equipment. Review toxicity and allergen hazards for the plant species and avoid sowing regulated invasive taxa or moving seed in violation of quarantine rules.
