Transplant
Transplant is a nursery handling process that moves an established seedling, rooted cutting, division, grafted plant, or tissue-culture plantlet from one container or site to another. It is not a propagation mechanism. Successful transplanting preserves root function, correct planting depth, water balance, identity, and future growth while minimizing shock.
Identification
Determine plant type, root architecture, container condition, developmental stage, destination environment, hardening status, and correct crown or graft-union depth. A transplant-ready plant has an adequately developed but not severely bound root system, healthy shoots, and no active disease. Avoid transplanting severely wilted, waterlogged, contaminated, or inadequately rooted material.
Symptoms / Signs
Success includes maintained turgor, new root growth, stable crown position, and resumed shoot expansion. Failure includes persistent wilt, scorch, root circling, buried crown or graft union, exposed roots, stem collapse, waterlogging, desiccation, or transplant shock. Initial survival does not guarantee establishment.
Life Cycle / Process
Moving disrupts root-soil contact and temporarily reduces water uptake. Roots must reestablish hydraulic continuity and grow into the new substrate. Hardening before movement and careful aftercare reduce the mismatch between root capacity and shoot demand.
Prevention
Harden plants where needed, water appropriately before handling, prepare the destination first, protect roots from drying, use clean tools and substrate, preserve orientation and depth, and transplant during favorable conditions. Do not amend individual planting holes in ways that create severe texture or drainage discontinuities.
Management / Control
Handle by the container or root ball rather than fragile stems. Loosen circling roots only according to crop tolerance. Set at the species-correct depth, backfill uniformly, water to settle roots, and provide temporary shade or wind protection if required. Track survival beyond the first flush of growth.
Procedure Steps
1. Confirm plant identity and transplant readiness. 2. Inspect roots, shoots, pests, disease, and hardening status. 3. Prepare the destination container or planting site. 4. Water the source plant appropriately before removal. 5. Remove the plant while supporting the root ball. 6. Correct circling or damaged roots only as the crop protocol permits. 7. Position at the correct depth and orientation. 8. Backfill with compatible substrate and eliminate large air gaps. 9. Irrigate to settle the root zone without saturation. 10. Protect from extreme sun, wind, cold, or heat. 11. Monitor turgor, rooting, and new growth. 12. Record survival and release status.
Safety Notes
Use safe lifting techniques, protect against sharp tools, toxic sap, treated media, and soilborne pathogens, and observe heat-stress precautions during field transplanting.
