Layering
Layering is the umbrella vegetative method in which adventitious roots form on a stem while it remains attached to the mother plant. Continued attachment reduces water stress and supplies carbohydrates during root initiation, making layering useful for difficult-to-root taxa. The family includes simple, tip, serpentine, air, mound or stool, trench, compound, and other specialized forms.

Use this record for conceptual guidance and method selection. Determine stem flexibility, maturity, node distribution, rooting location, whether soil contact is possible, and the number of propagules desired. Select a specific layering method before execution. Do not confuse layering with runners that root naturally, detached cuttings, grafting, or division.

Successful layers produce a functional root system while the shoot remains healthy and attached. Common failures are insufficient wounding, dry or saturated rooting zones, stem breakage, callus without roots, pest damage, or premature separation. Rooting success can vary among stem positions and seasons.

Attachment maintains hydraulic support while etiolation, girdling, bending, or burial alters light exposure, hormones, carbohydrates, and wound responses near the rooting zone. Adventitious roots form before separation. The resulting plant is clonal and retains donor maturity and pathogens.
Prevention
Use healthy stock, correct seasonal timing, sanitized tools, secure anchoring, clean rooting media, and stable moisture. Do not impose one auxin dose or rooting interval across all methods. Maintain labels and select a precise subtype.

Choose the method that matches the plant architecture and production goal. Monitor moisture and root development, protect the rooting zone, and separate only after adequate roots form. Pot or transplant with minimal root disturbance and gradual acclimatization.
Procedure Steps
1. Verify species suitability for layering. 2. Select the specific layering subtype. 3. Choose healthy donor stems of appropriate maturity. 4. Prepare tools, labels, rooting medium, and anchors or wrapping. 5. Create the subtype-specific bend, wound, burial, mound, or enclosure. 6. Maintain attachment to the parent. 7. Control moisture, temperature, light, and airflow around the rooting zone. 8. Inspect for callus, roots, and disease. 9. Continue until roots are functional. 10. Sever at the correct point. 11. Pot or transplant and acclimate. 12. Record method, timing, and survival.
