Aquatic / Water System

Aquatic / Water System is a frozen legacy umbrella identity for plant production or establishment with roots in open water, saturated substrate, floating culture, deep-water culture, or other water-dominated systems. It is not a soil type and should be treated as a system-context bridge pending administrator review.

Identification

Identify the actual system: natural pond or wetland margin, submerged planting bed, floating raft, deep-water culture, nutrient film, aquarium, constructed wetland, or another design. Record water depth, flow, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, EC, alkalinity, nutrients, turbidity, substrate, light, and biological load.

Symptoms / Signs

Failure may appear as root anoxia, algae, nutrient deficiency or toxicity, salt injury, unstable pH, biofilm clogging, pathogen outbreaks, sediment burial, or mechanical damage from flow. Soil-field symptoms and tests cannot be transferred directly to water culture.

Life Cycle / Process

Water chemistry and oxygen can change hourly with temperature, photosynthesis, respiration, feeding, decomposition, rainfall, and evaporation. Sediments and biofilms accumulate, while plant roots alter flow and nutrient uptake as biomass increases.

Prevention

Define the system boundary, maintain circulation and aeration appropriate to the organisms, prevent contaminated runoff and invasive-species escape, quarantine introduced plants or animals, and use water-compatible materials. Avoid calling a water system sterile.

Management / Control

Monitor the parameters that control the specific system, including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, EC or salinity, nutrient forms, flow, and microbial or algal load. Remove dead biomass, manage sediments and solids, and correct source-water or loading problems before adding chemicals.

Procedure Steps

1. Classify the exact aquatic or water-culture system. 2. Document source water, volume, depth, flow, substrate, organisms, and intended use. 3. Measure temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, EC or salinity, alkalinity, and relevant nutrients. 4. inspect roots, biofilms, algae, sediment, and circulation. 5. Identify the limiting biological, chemical, or hydraulic process. 6. Apply a system-specific correction. 7. record trends and reassess after weather, stocking, or design changes.

Safety Notes

Water systems combine drowning, electrical, pathogen, chemical, and slip hazards. Use ground-fault protection, barriers, sanitation, appropriate PPE, and safe access. Follow aquatic-species, discharge, wetland, and water-quality regulations.
