Wet-Edge Soil

Wet-edge soil is a legacy ecological and horticultural descriptor for soil at pond, stream, ditch, marsh, rain-garden, or seep margins where moisture fluctuates between saturated and aerated states. It is not automatically hydric soil, aquatic sediment, or a single texture class.

Identification

Map elevation relative to the water edge and document flooding, ponding, saturation duration, water-table fluctuation, texture, organic matter, redox features, erosion, and sediment deposition. Use approved hydric-soil indicators only for formal hydric determinations and pair soil evidence with hydrology and vegetation where regulations apply.

Symptoms / Signs

Plants may fail from prolonged anoxia, rapid drawdown, erosion, sediment burial, salt exposure, contaminated runoff, or root-zone drying between water events. Sulfurous odor, reduced gray matrices, iron concentrations, unstable banks, and exposed roots indicate important processes.

Life Cycle / Process

The zone migrates with rainfall, drought, water withdrawals, impoundment levels, channel change, and sedimentation. Repeated wetting and drying alters decomposition, nutrient release, redox chemistry, and greenhouse-gas production.

Prevention

Preserve natural buffers and grade transitions, avoid filling or compacting wet margins, select species for the documented hydroperiod, and prevent fertilizer, pesticide, or sediment runoff. Do not drain or excavate regulated wetlands without authorization.

Management / Control

Stabilize erosion with site-appropriate vegetation and low-impact methods, manage inflow quality, and match planting elevation to hydroperiod. Where public access or production is planned, test for contaminants and pathogens and assess bank stability.

Safety Notes

Wet margins can conceal deep mud, unstable banks, sharp debris, wildlife, pathogens, and contaminated water. Use flotation, barriers, gloves, and site-specific controls where appropriate. Follow wetland and water-management regulations.
