Deep Fertile Well-Drained Soil
Deep fertile well-drained soil is a legacy performance descriptor for soil with substantial unrestricted rooting volume, adequate nutrient supply, and removal of excess water without chronic saturation. It does not identify texture, soil order, series, or a universal amendment recipe.
Identification
Establish depth to restrictive layers and seasonal saturation, describe texture and structure by horizon, and test pH, organic matter, EC, and nutrients. Evaluate infiltration, internal drainage, root distribution, and landscape position rather than relying on appearance or vendor claims.
Symptoms / Signs
A soil may fail one component through shallow bedrock, dense pans, perched water, low nutrient reserves, nutrient imbalance, salinity, or excessive drainage and drought. Vigorous surface growth can mask shallow rooting.
Life Cycle / Process
Effective depth can be reduced by compaction, erosion, deposition, or rising water tables and improved by root channels or carefully targeted remediation. Fertility changes continually through uptake, leaching, mineralization, and amendments.
Prevention
Preserve topsoil and profile continuity, prevent deep compaction, manage erosion, and avoid excess irrigation or fertilizer. Select plants for the actual texture and climate despite the broad descriptor.
Management / Control
Develop a profile-based soil plan with separate water, nutrient, and compaction controls. Use cover crops and organic residues to support structure, but recognize when drainage engineering or a different planting location is needed. In North Florida, high rainfall and permeable sands make nutrient leaching a central concern.

1. Review site and grading history. 2. Describe the profile to the expected rooting depth. 3. Locate restrictive layers and seasonal water indicators. 4. Test fertility, pH, organic matter, and EC by management zone. 5. Evaluate infiltration and root-zone water storage. 6. Implement crop-specific irrigation and nutrient plans. 7. Reassess depth, drainage, and fertility trends periodically.
