Humus-Rich Moist But Well-Drained Soil
Humus-rich moist but well-drained soil is a legacy descriptor for a biologically active root zone with substantial stabilized organic matter, reliable moisture supply, and drainage sufficient to maintain aeration. “Humus-rich” is not a standardized laboratory class.
Identification
Measure soil organic matter or organic carbon and document texture, aggregation, pH, EC, nutrient status, infiltration, water retention, and seasonal saturation. Distinguish stable soil organic matter from fresh mulch, undecomposed litter, peat, or a dark color caused by minerals or wetness.
Symptoms / Signs
Problems include nutrient immobilization from fresh high-carbon inputs, salt or phosphorus accumulation from repeated compost, anaerobic odor, fungus gnat or pathogen pressure, hydrophobic drying, or excessive shrinkage. Moisture retention can become waterlogging when drainage is restricted.
Life Cycle / Process
Organic matter is continually decomposed, protected in aggregates, added by roots and residues, or lost through erosion and intensive tillage. Warm, humid North Florida conditions can accelerate decomposition, making surface cover and recurring carbon inputs important.
Prevention
Use mature, characterized amendments; account for their nutrient and salt content; preserve soil cover and roots; and avoid incorporating woody mulch into planting holes. Prevent prolonged saturation and unnecessary tillage.
Management / Control
Track organic matter, pH, EC, phosphorus, and nitrogen supply over time. Maintain mulch on the surface, irrigate according to root-zone moisture, and correct drainage constraints rather than adding more organic matter indiscriminately.

1. Separate surface mulch from the mineral root zone during assessment. 2. Sample organic matter, pH, EC, and nutrients. 3. Describe texture, aggregation, roots, and odor. 4. Observe drainage and moisture retention after rain or irrigation. 5. Characterize proposed compost or organic amendments. 6. Apply nutrients and carbon inputs from test results. 7. Monitor decomposition, salts, and seasonal aeration.
