Identification

Small green larvae taper at both ends, wriggle vigorously when disturbed, and may drop on silk. Adults fold their wings to show a pale diamond pattern along the back. The relevant host or site is cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, mustard, and other Brassicaceae. Inspect leaf undersides and growing points for larvae, mines, and mesh cocoons. Shake leaves over a tray to detect small larvae.

Young larvae mine or windowpane leaves; older larvae make small irregular holes and contaminate heads and florets. Fresh feeding carries live larvae or new frass; old scars persist.

Life Cycle / Process

Eggs are laid singly or in small groups. Larvae pupate in a loose mesh cocoon on leaves. Generations overlap rapidly in warm weather. Larvae cause the damage, except grasshoppers, whose nymphs and adults chew. Control works best before larvae enlarge, bore, or seal themselves in silk.

Prevention
