Japanese Beetles

Popillia japonica

Japanese Beetles is a regulated species-level scarab pest associated with roses, grapes, fruit trees, ornamentals, turf, and many broadleaf plants. Adults skeletonize foliage and feed on flowers and fruit; grubs prune turf roots. Adult and larval injury are evaluated separately.

Identification

Adults are metallic green with copper wing covers and distinct white hair tufts along the abdomen. Larvae are C-shaped white grubs in soil. Confirm the adult hair tufts, inspect preferred hosts, and sample turf separately when grub injury is suspected. Root larvae and internal feeders usually require specimens.

Symptoms / Signs

Adults skeletonize foliage and feed on flowers and fruit; grubs prune turf roots. Fresh larval injury includes live grubs, tunnels, root pruning, or internal feeding. Old scars do not prove activity.

Life Cycle / Process

Japanese beetles lay eggs in moist turf. White grubs feed on roots and overwinter in soil before pupating; metallic adults emerge seasonally and aggregate on favored plants.

Prevention

Inspect incoming stock above and below ground. Remove culls, volunteer hosts, spilled seed, and infested root balls where relevant to Japanese Beetles.

Management / Control

Handpick small populations, protect high-value plants, manage turf irrigation, and follow current nursery movement rules. Recheck adult and larval injury separately.

Procedure Steps

1. Inspect the plant part used by adults and the habitat used by larvae. 2. Collect adults and larvae with host data. 3. Separate adult chewing from larval root or internal injury. 4. Close the Japanese Beetles incident after fresh injury declines.

Safety Notes

Protect food, seed, packaging, workers, and Myco-Patrons during inspection and treatment. Use tamper-resistant placements where baits or traps are necessary, and keep pesticides off food-contact surfaces. Structural or termite work may require a licensed Florida pest-control operator.
