Mealybugs is treated as a family-level umbrella centered on Pseudococcidae. It matters in North Florida nursery, greenhouse, orchard, landscape, and propagation work wherever it occurs on ornamentals, citrus, tropical fruit, vegetables, herbs, greenhouse crops, roots, crowns, leaf axils, stems, fruit clusters, and occasionally stored planting material. Colonies remove sap, distort tender growth, contaminate fruit and foliage with wax, and produce honeydew that supports sooty mold. Ants often protect colonies. Severe infestations cause stunting, leaf drop, fruit rejection, or decline of roots and crowns. The practical scouting hinge is exposed mealy wax: the brief crawler stage spreads, then later females become increasingly protected within nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls.

Identification

Mealybugs are soft-bodied scale relatives covered with white powdery wax, often with short marginal filaments. Some species have two conspicuously long tail filaments, while others form dense cottony egg sacs. Root mealybugs remain belowground and may be missed during foliage inspection. Search ornamentals, citrus, tropical fruit, vegetables, herbs, greenhouse crops, roots, crowns, leaf axils, stems, fruit clusters, and occasionally stored planting material. Inspect protected sites such as nodes, leaf axils, under bracts, fruit contact points, pot rims, drainage holes, and root balls. Use a hand lens to count live females, crawlers, egg sacs, and natural enemies. Sticky cards detect winged males but are not a stand-alone measure of crop injury. During examination, separate mobile crawlers and hidden colonies from abandoned wax, dry shells, fungal residue, plant swellings, and holes left by parasitoids. Preserve an intact adult female for microscopy when the distinction among exposed mealy wax changes quarantine decisions, natural-enemy selection, or legal movement of plants.

Symptoms / Signs

Colonies remove sap, distort tender growth, contaminate fruit and foliage with wax, and produce honeydew that supports sooty mold. Ants often protect colonies. Severe infestations cause stunting, leaf drop, fruit rejection, or decline of roots and crowns. Fresh injury should be linked to living scales or mealybugs on the affected tissue. Residual signs around nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls may persist after mortality, so continuing injury must be tied to mobile crawlers and hidden colonies. Rule out the abiotic and disease problems most likely on nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls, including water stress, nutrient imbalance, root decline, spray injury, and sun damage.

Life Cycle / Process

Females usually pass through three nymphal instars; males commonly develop through an additional cocoon-like stage before becoming short-lived winged adults. Reproduction may be sexual or parthenogenetic, and some species give live birth rather than laying a conspicuous egg mass. Local spread follows crawler movement across nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls; wider jumps usually come from infested nursery material, pruning debris, containers, or handling.

Prevention

Quarantine infested incoming plants, remove weeds and culls that support the same species, prevent pot-to-pot contact where crawlers can bridge, and control ant access. Inspect roots before reusing containers or moving mother plants. Receiving inspections should open and examine nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls, because a quick scan of exposed foliage can miss exposed mealy wax.

Management / Control

Identify the species when biological control, quarantine, or crop movement depends on it. Remove dense colonies mechanically where practical, release or conserve mealybug destroyers and parasitoids suited to the species, and time oils, soaps, insect growth regulators, or labeled systemic products to exposed crawlers and young nymphs. Action becomes reasonable when mobile crawlers and hidden colonies is increasing, plant quality or propagation value is declining, or official movement rules apply. A label covering one wax-producing insect or crop does not automatically cover exposed mealy wax on nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls; both site and target must match.

Procedure Steps

1. Search nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls for exposed mealy wax, beginning with the freshest distortion, honeydew, or wax accumulation. 2. Collect intact females and crawlers from nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls; document the wax pattern, body color, reproductive material, and any diagnostic filaments. 3. Match predators, parasitoids, or a labeled treatment to exposed mealy wax and the stage exposed at nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls. 4. Reinspect nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls and adjacent plants until new crawlers and expanding colonies cease.

Safety Notes

When sampling nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls, protect eyes and skin from debris and sooty residue, then wash before returning to clean culture, harvest, or food-contact work. Before applying oils, soaps, or contact materials around nodes, crowns, fruit contacts, and root balls, test a small section under the expected temperature and moisture conditions; tender tissue may burn even when the target is correctly identified. Contain cut material carrying exposed mealy wax before it leaves the work zone, and consult current FDACS or USDA directions when the identity may be invasive or regulated.
