Rosemary

Salvia rosmarinus

Rosemary is a drought-tolerant Mediterranean shrub for sunny, sharply drained sites, with wet soil and hard freezes as its principal North Florida risks.

Botanical Overview

Rosemary is a drought-tolerant Mediterranean shrub for sunny, sharply drained sites, with wet soil and hard freezes as its principal North Florida risks.

Why We Feature This Specimen

Rosemary adds aroma, flavor, bloom, and specimen history to Green Grass Grove while keeping accession identity and responsible use attached to the plant.

Climate & Protection

Preferred Growing RangeUsda Zones 8–10.
Frost ToleranceEstablished Plants Tolerate Light To Moderate Frost, But Hard Freezes Can Kill Branches Or The Crown.

Sun / Light: Full sun.

Rosemary should be grown in full sun with sharply drained soil and strong airflow. North Florida humidity and summer rain are usually more limiting than winter cold. Accepted Salvia name retained; humid drainage and root rot are key risks.

Planting & Seasonal Guide

Starting & Germination Methods

Seed Sowing

Seed sowing is the umbrella operational method for placing botanical seed into a germination environment. It includes selection of containers or beds, medium, depth, spacing, moisture, temperature, light,…

Indoor Seed Starting

Indoor seed starting produces transplants in containers under managed temperature, light, moisture, sanitation, and spacing before outdoor or greenhouse establishment. It extends the production season, protects valuable seed,…

Direct Seed

Direct Seed is retained as a legacy identity for placing seed directly into its final production container, bed, plug position, restoration cell, or growing location without first raising…

Rosemary should be grown in full sun with sharply drained soil and strong airflow. North Florida humidity and summer rain are usually more limiting than winter cold. Accepted Salvia name retained; humid drainage and root rot are key risks.
Plant in fall through early spring in North Florida on a raised, dry site; protect young plants from severe freezes.

Spacing: Space 3–5 feet apart according to growth form and pruning plan.

Planting Depth: Sow small seed shallowly and set crowns, divisions, cloves, rhizomes, and woody root flares at their previous depth.

Pollination: Most herbs are useful pollinator plants when allowed to flower. Let selected plants flower for bees, beneficial insects, seed saving, or drying flowers.

Water, Soil & Nutrition

💧 Water & Moisture

Water deeply during establishment, then allow the root zone to dry substantially between irrigations.
Water to establish, then allow the root zone to dry partially between irrigations. Keep mulch away from woody crowns.
Use airflow, early irrigation, sanitation, and uncrowded spacing to reduce leaf spots, mildew, crown rot, and postharvest decline.

Drainage & Root-Zone Behavior

Nutrition & Deficiency Checks

Use low to moderate fertility; excess nitrogen and organic matter produce soft growth and increase root disease.
Check pH, root condition, irrigation, temperature, and container restriction before diagnosing nutrient deficiency.

Growth, Maintenance & Harvest

Mature Height3–6 ft
Mature Width3–6 ft
Growth RateModerate, becoming woody and drought tolerant after establishment.

Maintenance & Pruning

Use clean pinching, deadheading, division, woody renewal, or postharvest cleanup appropriate to the species. Do not shear diseased wet foliage.

Harvest or Observation

Harvest clean nonflowering tips during dry weather, never removing more than about one-third of green growth at once.

Storage & Preservation

Dry herbs quickly with airflow or refrigerate fresh material. Store seed, cloves, rhizomes, or cuttings with complete accession labels.

Harvestable Plant Parts & Uses

LeavesFlowersSeeds

Harvest clean aromatic leaves or flowering stems during dry weather, never removing more foliage than the plant can replace.

Aquaponics, Hydroponics & Aeroponics

🐟
Not Recommended

Aquaponics

Use only with adequate root oxygen, mineral balance, pest exclusion, and harvest sanitation.

💧
Poor

Hydroponics

  • Target pH5.8–6.8
  • Target EC1.0–1.8 mS/cm

Use only where root form, crop duration, drainage preference, and food safety are compatible. Universal N-P-K formulas are omitted.

🌫
Experimental

Aeroponics

No profile-specific operating notes have been recorded.

Pests, Diseases, Safety & Toxicology

Spider mites, scale insects, mealybugs, whiteflies, and spittlebugs may attack stressed plants.
Root rot, crown rot, Botrytis, and foliar blights are favored by wet soil and poor airflow.
Use raised drainage, restrained irrigation, selective pruning, clean cutting stock, and prompt isolation of scale or root-rot cases.
Rosemary most often fails from inappropriate moisture, poor airflow, wrong seasonal timing, lost accession identity, or excessive harvest.
Culinary leaf use is appropriate for correctly identified, untreated rosemary. Essential oil and concentrated therapeutic use require separate safety review.
Use normal culinary quantities only where the species is established as food. Essential oils and concentrated medicinal preparations require separate professional guidance. Follow pesticide labels, allergen cautions, pet-safety guidance, and responsible medicinal-use boundaries.
