Plant Bright Lights Swiss chard when the next six to ten weeks are expected to remain predominantly cool. Use direct sowing where described for the crop, or set hardened transplants in late afternoon and irrigate immediately. Swiss chard is a moderately heavy feeder that responds to steady nitrogen and potassium, but excessive nitrogen can produce weak petioles and elevated nitrate concentrations. Split applications are preferable on Florida sand because nutrients leach rapidly during irrigation and storms. Maintain pH near 6.0–7.0 so magnesium, manganese, iron, and boron remain balanced; avoid overliming. Calcium-related injury is usually a transport problem linked to rapid growth, root stress, salinity, or uneven water rather than a simple absence of calcium in the soil. Confirm suspected problems with soil, media, irrigation-water, or tissue testing before corrective fertilization.
Nitrogen deficiency causes pale older leaves and reduced leaf size; magnesium shortage can create interveinal chlorosis on older foliage, and potassium stress may scorch margins or weaken petioles. Boron imbalance can damage young tissue, but the safe application range is narrow and laboratory confirmation is important. Iron or manganese chlorosis may reflect pH-related lockout rather than low total soil supply. Use clean seed, sanitized trays, crop rotation, drip irrigation, adequate spacing, and rapid removal of infected leaves. Avoid working in wet foliage and do not compost severely diseased material when the causal organism may survive locally.
Use clean seed and media, avoid chronically infested beds, and rotate away from related crops when leafminer, Cercospora, or root disease becomes persistent. Scout weekly and increase frequency after warm wet weather. Harvest with sanitized tools, remove damaged leaves from the field, and cool produce promptly.
